In 2014, Black Lens was created with a singular focus: to spotlight the incredible work of African-American filmmakers by bringing their films to the Milwaukee Film Festival.
In response to a community desire to support Black Lens programming initiatives, the Black Lens Council membership program was launched in 2016. Members’ support enhances the festival in several critical areas, including introducing African-American filmmakers to Milwaukee’s richly diverse community and strengthening community dialogue through critical discussions and social events.
If you want to support Black Lens’ commitment to impacting the community through film, consider joining the Black Lens Council at one of the three levels below. Each membership level comes with dual benefits for and a friend, family members, or partner to enjoy together.
(Named after the film that brought honest depictions to the big screen in an era of exploitation.)
Benefits at this level include a pair of tickets to four different films in the Black Lens program, a subscription to our newsletter, name recognition in our festival Program Book, Milwaukee Film Membership, and more! First-time members receive a Black Lens Council t-shirt.
(Named after the Spike Lee joint that found Wesley and Denzel at their absolute best.)
Benefits at this level include everything the COOLEY HIGH level gets, but instead of tickets to four Black Lens films, you get tickets to every film in the Black Lens program.
(If you don’t know Melvin Van Peebles’ seminal work, Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song, first thing you should do after you join this level is seek this film out!)
Benefits include everything at the MO’BETTER level, but instead of tickets you get two passes to the Milwaukee Film Festival, which get you into every single film at the festival!
