What’s your name?

Marilka Vélez and David Muehlbauer

Something fun about yourself?

Fun fact about David, for the last 10 years he’s watched every film nominated in every category of the Academy Awards before the Oscars.

What’s your relationship with Milwaukee Film?

I serve on the board and lead Brand Marketing for Associated Bank (the official bank of Milwaukee Film and presenting sponsor of the Milwaukee Film Festival for ten years). David and I are both OG Milwaukee Film members.

What’s your favorite thing about being on the board?

My favorite thing about being on the Milwaukee Film board is seeing firsthand how film brings people together—sparking conversations, celebrating diverse voices, and creating community. I love being part of an organization that not only elevates art but also uses it as a tool for connection, inclusion, and impact in Milwaukee. It’s inspiring to support the team’s vision and to help create opportunities for stories that might not otherwise be heard.

What movie did you pick?

Selena

When did you first see said movie?

I am pretty sure this was a rental from Blockbuster.

Who is your favorite actor/actress in your movie and why?

Jennifer Lopez.

Jennifer Lopez is my favorite actress in Selena because that role was a true breakthrough—not just for her, but for representation in film. She was relatively unknown at the time, yet she said yes to this enormous opportunity and poured herself into honoring Selena’s legacy with authenticity and heart. That leap of faith not only changed her career, it earned her critical acclaim, including a Golden Globe nomination and an American Latino Media Arts (ALMA) Award, and it cemented the film as a cultural touchstone. For me, it’s such an inspiring reminder that sometimes the moments that transform our lives are the ones that feel the most intimidating, and believing in yourself enough to step into them can open doors you never imagined.

In ten words or less, tell us why we HAVE to see this movie!

Two cultures, one voice – love, music, and unstoppable spirit.

Okay – expand on that – why did you make this your board pick?

We made this board pick together because it combines all the things we love in this world: family, music, film, Latin and American culture.

Any words of wisdom you’d like to impart?

Great films stand the test of time because their stories continue to strike new notes and help us reflect on the accomplishments and struggles of our time.
