Craft Cinema Introduced At Oriental Theatre Tickets now available for purchase online

MILWAUKEE - Wednesday, July 11, 2018 - Milwaukee Film is pleased to introduce Craft Cinema programming at the Oriental Theatre. From beloved classics to mini-festivals, local offerings, cult curiosities, and everything in between, Craft Cinema is now on tap at your locally-operated East Side cinema. Harkening back to the programming ethos that guided the Oriental Theatre in the1970s and 1980s when it operated as a true “calendar house”, Craft Cinema is Milwaukee Film’s effort to showcase a variety of limited-run and unique film experiences on our big screens that reflect the variety and breadth of filmmaking, both today and throughout cinema history. Tickets are now available online at orientaltheatremke.com, including for previously announced first-run films BlacKkKlansman and McQueen.   FILMS   Filmworker (USA / 2017 / DCP / Director: Tony Zierra) Date: opening 08/17 It’s a rare person who would give up fame and fortune to toil in obscurity for someone else’s creative vision. Yet, that’s exactly what Leon Vitali did after his acclaimed performance as Lord Bullingdon in Stanley Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon. The young actor surrendered his thriving career to become Kubrick’s loyal right-hand man. For more than two decades, Leon played a crucial role behind-the-scenes helping Kubrick make and maintain his legendary body of work. The complex, interdependent relationship between Leon and Kubrick was founded on devotion, sacrifice and the grueling, joyful reality of the creative process. By entering their unique world we come to understand how the mundane gives rise to the magnificent as timeless cinema is brought to life at its most practical and profound level.   Barry Lyndon (UK, USA / 1975 / 35mm / Director: Stanley Kubrick) Date: 08/19 Presented in conjunction with Filmworker is Kubrick’s acclaimed adaptation of William Makepeace Thackeray's novel, in which a likeable young Irishman changes into a conniving, manipulative rogue. The protagonist finds himself homeless after taking part in a fake duel and is then captured by a Prussian highwayman, and meets up with a spy, but his fortunes change when he marries a wealthy titled woman in order to secure his future. This is the first film in a planned series of Stanley Kubrick films throughout the fall and winter.   Summer of ‘84 (Canada, USA / 2018 / DCP / Directors: François Simard, Anouk Whissell, and Yoann-Karl Whissell) Date: opening 08/17 Guest in attendance! Screenwriter and Milwaukee area local Stephen J. Smith will be in attendance at the opening on August 17. For 15-year-old Davey (Graham Verchere), the thought of having a serial killer in his suburban town circa the 1980s is a scary yet exciting prospect at the start of a lazy summer. In hormonal overdrive, Davey and his friends dream of sexual conquests until the news reports of the Cape May Killer. Davey convinces his friends that they must investigate, and they come to the conclusion that his next-door neighbor, an unassuming, single police officer, could be the prime suspect. Is this a case of successful amateur sleuthing, or simply an overactive imagination fueled by Reagan-era paranoia? (Cinepocalypse)          Back to Burgundy (France / 2017 / DCP / Director: Cédric Klapisch) Date: opening 08/17 After having missed Milwaukee screens in 2017, Milwaukee Film is now bringing this film to the Oriental Theatre! Three siblings reunite at their home in picturesque Burgundy to save the family vineyard in this tender tale of a new generation finding its own unique blend from acclaimed director Cédric Klapisch (L’Auberge Espagnole). Jean (Pio Marmaï), the black sheep of the family, unexpectedly returns home from a decade abroad to reconnect with his hospitalized father. He’s welcomed by his strong-willed sister, Juliette (Ana Girardot), who took over the reins of the vineyard after their father fell ill, and Jeremie (François Civil), the youngest of the three who has recently married into one of the region’s more prestigious wine families. Their father passes shortly after Jean’s return, leaving them with the estate and a looming inheritance tax of half a million dollars. As four seasons and two harvests go by, Jean, Juliette, and Jeremie have to learn to reinvent their relationship and trust in each other as they work to preserve the land that ties them together. (Music Box Films)   Bamboozled (USA / 2000 / 35mm / Director: Spike Lee) Date: 08/23 Presented in conjunction with BlacKkKlansman, revisit an earlier Spike Lee joint. A blistering satire of network television's pitfalls and prejudices, a humorous look at how race, ratings and the pursuit of power lead to a television writer's stunning rise and tragic downfall. Pierre Delacroix, a young, Harvard-educated man, who is the sole person of color, writing for an upstart network with floundering ratings. Despite several attempts, Delacroix has yet to see any of his concepts go into production.   Cowboy Bebop: The Movie - Knockin' on Heaven's Door + Bonus Material (Japan, USA  / 2001 / DCP / Director: Shinichirō Watanabe) Dates: 8/23 (subtitled) & 8/25 (dubbed) Celebrate the 30th anniversary of the classic Cowboy Bebop anime series by revisiting the film complete with new bonus material! The bounty-hunting Bebop crew pursues a mysterious terrorist plot to unleash a deadly virus that would wipe out the masses!   TICKET INFORMATION: Milwaukee Film Members receive $2 off tickets and discounts on concessions.   Regular: $11 Matinee: $9 Senior (60 and up): $8 Child (12 & under): $6 Promotional film stills can be downloaded by following this link: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/kq9z6g25smmn9r2/AAA7mbkSvvnwy-mDvB2a1Wyba?dl=0   ###   About Milwaukee Film Milwaukee Film is a nonprofit arts organization dedicated to entertaining, educating, and engaging our community through cinematic experiences, with a vision to make Milwaukee a center for film culture.
