Cine Sin Fronteras Line-Up Marked by Themes of History and Celebration
Birds of Passage, Colombia’s Foreign Language Oscar selection, to be featured
MILWAUKEE - September 11, 2018 – Cine Sin Fronteras, a cultural pillar of Milwaukee Film, reveals the program category’s full line-up at the 10th Annual Milwaukee Film Festival, presented by Associated Bank. This year’s program explores new genres, including an animated film for children, El Libro de Lila (Lila’s Book), the first Colombian animated feature film directed by a woman; Nos Llaman Guerreras (They Call Us Warriors), a sports documentary about the Venezuelan Women’s World Cup Soccer Team; and Mexican horror film Vuelven.
Through eight feature films and two short films, Cine Sin Fronteras aims to showcase the untold stories of the rich and vibrant Latinx diaspora around the world, including Latinx, Chicanx, Latin American, indigenous, and Afro-Latinx communities.
Now in its third year, the program continues to bring in diverse and powerful films from around the world, including Cristina Gallego and Ciro Guerra’s (Embrace of the Serpent, MFF2015) newest feature, Pájaros de Verano (Birds of Passage), which was just announced as Colombia’s official selection for the Foreign Language Oscar category; The Unafraid, which follows three undocumented DACA students in Georgia as they fight for a right to accessible higher education; and ¡Las Sandinistas!, which shines a light on the thousands of forgotten women who helped topple a totalitarian government in Nicaragua.
“We continue to highlight those untold stories that are too often hidden, silenced, or ignored,” states Cine Sin Fronteras co-programmer Claudia Guzmán. “From forgotten women revolutionaries, to the unsolved case of 43 missing Mexican students, to the resilience and ingenuity of children, these stories demand the attention of our audiences.”
“Through themes of justice and history, celebration and hope, this year’s selections inform and inspire,” states Cine Sin Fronteras co-programmer Jeanette Martín.
A Cine Sin Fronteras Kickoff party, featuring food, music, and a preview of films in the festival, will take place on Thursday, October 11 from 6-8 PM at Latino Arts (1028 S. 9th Street). The event is free and open to the public.
During the festival, Cine Sin Fronteras presents a musical tribute to Rubén Blades following the premier of Yo No Me Llamo Rubén Blades, which chronicles the the acclaimed Panamanian musician, actor, and politician’s remarkable life. The event takes place on Saturday, October 27th from 8 PM -10 PM at Nomad Nacional (625 S. 5th Street).
Cine Sin Fronteras is presented by Froedtert and the Medical College of Wisconsin and is sponsored by Radio Caliente and Telemundo Wisconsin. Translation services are supported by the Milwaukee Brewers Baseball Club.

Ayotzinapa, El Paso de la Tortuga

U.S. Premiere! On September 26, 2014, 43 student activists from Ayotzinapa were violently detained by local police, and soon thereafter disappeared. The facts soon became plain to see - this was an act perpetrated by members of the army, government, and local police colluding with organized crime. A sobering documentary that examines the government corruption at both state and federal levels that allowed this, as well as the massive worldwide protests it sparked, reminding the families seeking closure that their pain and desire for justice were shared the world over.
Pájaros de Verano (Birds of Passage)

Oscar-nominated duo Ciro Guerra and Cristina Gallego (Embrace of the Serpent, MFF 2015) return with this sprawling and enthralling story of one family and the birth of Colombian drug trafficking in the 1970's. The indigenous Wayuu clan live a lifestyle steeped in mystic tradition, largely in isolation from the outside world. But increased demand for marijuana creates a dynasty while simultaneously letting modernity slowly encroach upon their way of life. Exploding with eye-popping visuals, Birds of Passage is a cinematic tour de force that tells a generation-spanning crime epic of Shakespearean dimensions.

An imaginative animated tale perfect for all ages, El Libro de Lia (Lila’s Book) is a wondrous tale of memory, literacy, and environmental stewardship. Lila is a character from a book who has somehow fallen out of her paper world into ours. She must convince Ramón, who once read her story as a child but has since grown up and lost his sense of wonder (and even worse, his love of reading), to embark with her on a dangerous journey to the Desert of Lost Memories in order to return her home.
Nos Llaman Guerreras (They Call Us Warriors)

Hardened by their day-to-day existence surrounded by social and economic upheaval, Venezuela's womens' soccer team perseveres - thrives even, as they steamroll through their South American opponents and find themselves in a position to bring home Venezuela's first-ever World Cup. Taking refuge in team sport, these incredible women warriors transcend the poverty and gendered social status they must face in their everyday lives to become larger-than-life figures capable of inspiring an entire country.

In late 70's Nicaragua, thousands of women ushered in a historic moment of change, leading social and combat reform during the Sandinista Revolution (and subsequent US-backed Contra War), banding together to fight and topple the totalitarian government. Now, nearly forty years later, these revolutionary women must once again lead a social uprising in order to prevent the erasure of their work in a modern-day Nicaragua plagued by gender-based violence and a government that greatly resembles that which they fought so hard to overthrow.

Follow the four-year odyssey of three young immigrants in Georgia in this powerful observational documentary portrait of what it means to grow up in the United States as an undocumented (but fully DACAmented) American. Disallowed from attending state universities or receiving financial aid by the state, Alejandro, Silvia, and Aldo nonetheless persevere in the face of the rising tide of ignorance and hatred, embracing activism and fighting for their families and communities, all the while pursuing their right to a higher education.

Followed by the ghost of her mother (the victim of the vicious drug cartels who essentially hold their town captive), young Estrella falls in with a band of young orphans who will rely on supernatural aid once the cartels put these children in their crosshairs. La Alineación de Cine Sin Fronteras está Marcada por Temas de Historia y Festejo
Birds of Passage, la elección Colombiana al Oscar por mejor película extranjera será destacada
MILWAUKEE - 09/11/2018 – Cine Sin Fronteras, un pilar cultural del Festival de Cine de Milwaukee, revela la alineación completa de las categorías del programa en el decimo año del Festival de Cine de Milwaukee, presentado por Associated Bank. El programa de este año explora nuevos generos, incluyendo una animación cinematográfica para niños, El Libro de Lila, el primer cortometraje animado Colombiano dirigido por una mujer; Nos Llaman Guerreras (They Call Us Warriors), un documental deportivo que nos habla del equipo Nacional Venezolano de la Copa Mundial de Futbol femenino; y el aclamado rodaje mexicano de terror, Vuelven.
Por medio de ocho largometrajes y dos cortometrajes, Cine Sin Fronteras tiene como objetivo hablar de las historias aun no dichas de la diáspora Latinx que enriquecen y hacen vibrar a las diferentes diásporas alrededor del mundo como las que provienen de comunidades Latinx, Chicanx, Latinoamericanas, Indígenas y Afro latinxs.
En su tercer año, el programa continua brindándonos películas de alrededor del mundo que son diversas e impactantes, como por ejemplo la más reciente película de Cristina Gallego y Ciro Guerra (Embrace of the Serpent, MFF2015), Birds of Passage, una largometraje proveniente de Colombia la cual a sido seleccionada al Oscar en la categoría como mejor película extranjera; The Unafraid, sigue la historia de tres estudiantes indocumentados con DACA mientras estando en el estado de Georgia luchan por conseguir acceso a la universidad; El Libro de Lila, es el primer largometraje animado de Colombia dirigido por una mujer, el cual ofrece la opción bilingüe, ingles-español para el deleite de las familias; y ¡Las Sandinistas!, la cual trae a la luz las miles de mujeres olvidadas quienes ayudaron a derrocar el gobierno totalitario en Nicaragua.
“Continuamos destacando aquellas historias que aun no han sido dichas y que muchas veces son escondidas, silenciadas, o ignoradas,” dice la co-programadora de Cine Sin Fronteras, Claudia Guzmán. “Desde mujeres revolucionarias que han sido olvidadas, el caso de los 43 estudiantes mexicanos desaparecidos que no ha sido resuelto, hasta la resistencia e ingenuidad de los niñxs, estas historias exigen la atención de nuestras audiencias.”
“Mediante temas de justicia e historia, festejo y esperanza, la alineación de películas de este año son para informar e inspirar,” así lo destaca co-programadoa de Cine Sin Fronteras Jeanette Martín.
La fiesta inicial de Cine Sin Fronteras será el Jueves, 10 de octubre a las 6 PM en Latino Arts localizado en 1028 S. 9th Street. La fiesta tendrá un ambiente único con comida, buena música, y previos de las películas de Cine Sin Fronteras. El evento es gratis y abierto al público.
Durante el festival, Cine Sin Fronteras estará presentado un tributo musical a Rubén Blades después de la premier de Yo No Me Llamo Rubén Blades, la cual relata la vida del aclamado músico, actor y político panameño. El evento tomara lugar el día sábado, 27 de octubre de 8 pm a 10 pm en Nomad Nacional localizado en el 625 S 5th Street.

Ayotzinapa, El paso de la Tortuga

El 26 de septiembre del 2014, 43 estudiantes activistas de Ayotzinapa fueron violentamente detenidos por la policía local y al poco tiempo después desaparecieron. Pronto los hechos fueron fáciles de deducir – esto fue un acto perpetuado por miembros de las fuerzas armadas, el gobierno, y la policía local implicado con el crimen organizado. Un documental que pone a pensar y examina la corrupción del gobierno al nivel estatal y federal que dejo que esto ocurriera. Asi, tambien como las protestas masivas que fueron organizadas por todo el mundo, recordando a las familias de los desaparecidos que buscan un cierre a su dolor y deseo de justicia compartida con el mundo entero.

El clan indígena Wayuu vive un estilo de vida adentrado en la tradición mística, en un aislamiento entero del mundo exterior. Pero la alta demanda de marihuana crea una dinastía mientras que la modernidad lentamente traspasa su forma de vida. Con visuales que no dejan ni parpadear, Birds of Passage es una obra maestra que relata el crimen inter-generacional épico de dimensiones shakesperianas.

Un cuento imaginable animado perfecto para todas las edades, El Libro de Lila (Lila’s Book) cuenta la maravillosa historia de recuerdos, alfabetización, y manejo del medio ambiente. Lila es un personaje de un libro que ha caído fuera de su mundo de papel al nuestro. Ella debe de convencer a Ramón, quien alguna vez leyó su historia de Lila cuando era niño. Ahora como adulto, Ramón ha perdido su sensación de asombro (y peor aún, su amor por la lectura) pero junto con Lila los dos se embarcan en un recorrido peligroso al Desierto de Los Recuerdos Perdidos para poder regresar Lila a casa.

A finales de los años setenta, miles de mujeres se unieron a un movimiento de cambio histórico que inicio una reforma social y de combate durante la Revolución Sandinista (y subsecuentemente los Contra apoyados por Estados Unidos), uniéndose para luchar y derrocar al gobierno totalitario. Ahora, casi cuarenta años después, estas mujeres revolucionarias deben una vez más iniciar un levantamiento social para prevenir que se borre su trabajo en la Nicaragua actual plagada por violencia de género y un gobierno que se asemeja al que duramente combatieron para derrocar.

Perseguida por el fantasma de su madre (una víctima de los violentos carteles de droga quienes mantienen a su pueblo cautivo), la joven Estrella se encuentra a un grupo de jóvenes huérfanos quienes dependerán de sus poderes supernaturales una vez que pongan a los niños en la mira. Desafiante y conmovedora, esta mezcla cuidadosa de un ambiente mágico realista y de terror del mundo real (la noción de miles de niños desaparecidos es muy real en nuestros tiempos) es un cuento de hadas moderno junto a lo mejor de Guillermo del Toro.
