Past Youth Education Programs
Education Screenings
From 2010-2024 we brought more than 91,000 students to the historic Oriental Theatre for film screenings paired with curriculum to expand media literacy and other topics back in the classroom.
Reel Talks
From 2014-2024 we took visiting and local filmmakers into classrooms around our community, giving visibility to careers in film and the arts.
Take 1 and Take 2 Teen Filmmaking Lab
Launched in 2020 as our High School Filmmking Lab, we welcomed a group of teens each semester to make films in a collaborative, supportive environment. Check out their films here.
Melinda Krei Educator Fellowship
Annually from 2015-2024, a cohort of educators took the Milwaukee Film Festival as their classroom, following that with seminars and readings, all leading to a culinating experience where they created a teaching object to use film in their teaching environments further.
On-Site Workshops
From 2012 to 2014, Milwaukee Film’s Education Department offered a series of workshops to engage youth interested in filmmaking. Workshops taught students to critically view media as they learned about and created Public Service Announcements (PSAs) or music videos.

Collaborative Cinema
From 2008 to 2013, Milwaukee Film’s Collaborative Cinema program provided high school students, college students, and emerging professionals the opportunity to better understand the filmmaking process through hands-on experience and creative collaboration. Each year, the Collaborative Cinema crew worked together to create and finish a short film by participating in every step of the process, from screenwriting and pre-production to distribution.
