The Whistlers (La Gomera)

When a corrupt Bucharest police inspector tries to pull off a heist in the Canary Islands, he encounters one rather unusual problem: His accomplices all speak an indigenous language largely based on whistling. Filmmaker and MFF alum Corneliu Porumboiu is one of key figures of the Romanian New Wave, and he’s in top form with this colorful, violent, fast-paced, and irreverent neo-noir that’s already been selected as the Romanian submission to next year’s Academy Awards.

"An elegant and stylishly crafted piece of entertainment."
- Guardian

"Poromboiu has always been the funniest of the Romanian new wave directors, albeit with a bitter twist and deliberately rough delivery. Here, clearly revelling in the constraints of genre convention, he delivers pure entertainment."
- The Age (Australia)

"Droll and clever."
