In 1977, 39-year-old Janet Guthrie became the first woman to qualify for, and compete in, the world’s most famous race, the Indianapolis 500. During the era of Battle of the Sexes, Guthrie faced systemic sexism and public vitriol as she raced into the hearts of women everywhere. But sadly, her incredible legacy isn’t widely known today. Courtesy of ESPN Films, the story of this former aerospace engineer is fully revealed, both from her contemporaries and from the trailblazing woman herself.
