Searching For Sugar Man @ Landmark Downer Theatre (Now Playing)
(dir. Malik Bendjelloul, Sweden/UK, 2012)
Ever hear the phrase "I'm big in Japan?" 1970s folk singer Sixto Rodriguez was big in South Africa. Only he didn't actually know that. He also didn't know that most of South Africa believed he'd passed away years ago. This documentary follows two fans of his-- Stephen "Sugar" Segerman and Craig Bartholomew Strydom-- as they set out to discover if Rodriguez was actually dead, and if not, what the heck he's been up to all these years.

Ethel @ HBO (Thursday, October 18 @ 9pm)
(dir. Rory Kennedy, USA, 2012)
As a parent, you get a little teary-eyed when it comes time to finally send your child out into the real world. But you're also proud of what that kid will do out there. That's how we feel when we see our festival films make their way to VOD, DVD and cable. And so it goes that we shed a tear of great pride for Ethel's official post-festival premiere. This MFF 2012 Documentary Favorite tells the touching life story of Ethel Kennedy, the wife of the late senator and civil rights leader Robert Kennedy. If you don't have HBO, get it. Or find a friend who does, and conveniently make plans to hang out with them tonight around 9pm.
