Arbitrage @ Downer Theatre (Opens Friday, Sep 14)
(dir. Nicholas Jarecki, USA, 2012)
Milwaukee Film Members saw this last month as their Free Monthly Member Screening, and based on their post-screening ballots, you should probably be at the Downer this Friday. Officer/gentleman Richard Gere stars as a hedge fund magnate who makes the kind of terrible personal and professional choices that allow suspenseful thrillers like this one to be so great. It also doesn’t hurt that both Susan Sarandon (as Gere’s wife) and Tim Roth (not as Gere’s wife) put in the kind of performances that make award-season enthusiasts drool.

Killer Joe @ Oriental Theatre (Opens Friday, Sep 14)
(dir. William Friedkin, USA, 2012)
If movies have taught us anything, it’s that putting a hit out on your mother is a terrible idea. Also a terrible idea: planning said hit with your dad (Thomas Haden Church), hiring a police detective (Matthew McConaughey, in one of his best roles to date) to do the actual hit, and using your sister (Juno Temple) as a retainer until you can afford to pay said police detective. Yet Chris (Emile Hirsch) does this anyway. Kids these days... Killer Joe is based on the play of the same name by Steppenwolf Theatre’s Tracy Letts (whose August: Osage County is also being made into a major motion picture).
