Ruby Sparks @ Oriental (Opens Friday, August 3)
(dir. Jonathan Dayton & Valerie Faris, USA, 2012)
Finding Mr. or Mrs. Right can be tough. Creating Mr. or Mrs. Right sounds much easier. At least on paper, anyway. Ruby Sparks is a film about that exact concept. It’s also the name of the “perfect girl” that Calvin (Paul Dano) dreams up when faced with a severe bout of writer’s block. Surely there won’t be any consequences to controlling your girlfriend’s every move by writing her life out on a page, right? Watch the trailer for Ruby Sparks
Moulin Rouge @ Milwaukee Art Museum (Thursday, Aug 2 at 6:15 PM)
(dir. John Huston, UK, 1952)
No, not the tripped-out version with dreamy-eyed Ewan McGregor. This is the “old enough to be Ewan McGregor’s dad” version, directed by the legendary John Huston, and starring Jose Ferrer and the late, great Zsa Zsa Gabor. The Milwaukee Art Museum is showing this fictional account of French artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec for one night only to celebrate their Posters of Paris exhibition. Libeled Lady @ Charles Allis Art Museum (Wednesday, Aug 8 at 7:30 PM)
(dir. Jack Conway, USA, 1936)
Do the words “screwball comedy” mean anything to you? In 1936, those words meant you were probably watching Libeled Lady, starring Hollywood icons like Jean Harlow and Spencer Tracy. The Charles Allis Art Museum is screening this for one night only as part of their “Movie Time” series. Watch the trailer for Libeled Lady
Le Havre on DVD
(dir. Aki Kaurismaki, Finland/France/Germany, 2011)
Sound familiar? Probably because our friends at UWM’s Union Theater screened this back in February. Now, thanks to Criterion, it’s available on DVD. Le Havre tells the story of an elderly shoe shiner in the port city of the same name. He meets an African boy who’s running from French authorities as an illegal immigrant, and helps the boy make his way to London to find his mother. Watch the trailer for Le Havre
