Zero Dark Thirty
Zero Dark Thirty

Zero Dark Thirty @ Oriental Theatre, Fox-Bay (Opens Fri, Jan. 11)
(dir. Kathryn Bigelow, USA, 2012)
Director Kathryn Bigelow’s follow-up to her Oscar award-winning film The Hurt Locker is proving to be another awards darling, even before its wide release. Zero Dark Thirty tracks the story of the extensive and complicated hunt for Osama bin Laden, lead by CIA agent Maya (Jessica Chastain). The depiction of torture and enhanced interrogation techniques has stirred up its fair share of controversy, leading to a Senate Committee investigation of the access Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal had to classified intelligence documents. Also raising some red flags: Bigelow was notably absent from the Best Directing category from this year’s Oscar list, despite having previously been the first woman to win in this category in 2010.

Compliance (MFF 2012) on DVD
(dir. Craig Zobel, USA, 2012)
We think it's safe to say Compliance was our most controversial film at last year's festival, with one, um, delicate moment prompting a walk out or two (or three? But who's counting.). Those that hung in there had a special treat, as Jack Turner (MFF Advisory Board member and producer of a gaggle of good films) spoke with director Zobel by phone during the screening and shared some thoughts from him during the post-screening Conversation at Cafe Hollander. Inspired by real-life events, this acclaimed feature is a chilling story of human nature, and made it on Artistic and Executive Director Jonathan Jackson's Best of 2012 list.

Typeface @ Jacklope Lounj (Thurs, Jan. 9 @ 7p)
(dir. Justine Nagan, USA, 2009)
Thanks to our good friend Mary Louise Schumacher for reporting on this film screening and fundraiser for the world's only wood type museum, which just happens to be in our fair state. And is getting evicted. AIGA Wisconsin is hosting a fundraiser (tonight!), which includes a screening of the 2009 documentary about the museum produced by some other good friends of ours --Chicago's Kartemquin Films (Hoop Dreams, The Interrupters).
