Announcing titles for the 2012 Milwaukee Film Festival is incredibly exciting, but I'm most excited to share with you our new late-night program, Cinema Hooligante. I love a lot of different types of films, but when I'm not watching films for work, I'll always pick a horror flick. When coming up with the new program, I had the late, great Times Cinema Friday Night Freak Show in mind. I used to go to every Freak Show I could, which featured insanely fun films and an even more fun audience (huge thanks to Eric Levin and WMSE for running that series as long as they did). I miss those events and wanted to get that audience back together at our festival, so we put together a lineup that will bring back great memories for some of us, while encouraging a new group of late-night fiends to create their own.
A couple of awesome bits to note: first, local filmmaker Mark Borchardt is presenting the incomparable drive-in classic The Giant Spider Invasion with legendary Wisconsin filmmaker Bill Rebane joining us for a special Q&A after. This will be nothing short of amazing, so I hope you’re as excited as I am to check this out. Second, there are a good amount of horror films made in Wisconsin, but you’ll be hard pressed to find a better one than Dead Weight. These filmmakers have an exciting future in horror ahead of them. Lastly, there were people vomiting and passing out at the premiere of V/H/S at Sundance this year. Don’t even tell me you’re not intrigued.
Thanks to our good friends at The Onion/A.V. Club Milwaukee for sponsoring this program. Check out the full 2012 Cinema Hooligante line-up here.
The complete 2012 Milwaukee Film Fesival program line-up will be released on September 8 at the WMSE Backyard BBQ in Cathedral Square. Tickets for all films will go on sale September 12 for Milwaukee Film members and September 13 for the general public.
